The challenge of visiting loved ones with Dementia

By Judy Cohen

Whether living at home or in a nursing home, visiting your loved one who suffers from any form of dementia can become very challenging. Using the Montessori Methods for Dementia, here are several tips to make your visit more enjoyable and beneficial for the both of you:

–           Do not focus on talking, instead focus on activities

–           Engage with them; focus on their needs, abilities and interests

–           Concentrate on their strengths; can they read, walk, hold, paint, sing, or touch

–           Remember to focus on the approach by allowing them to feel good about themselves rather than focusing on their limitations

–           Include tangible materials, give choices wherever possible, demonstrate first, simplify the activities and give hints and cues

–           There is no right or wrong – do not correct them.

If the experience is good for both of you, the time spent with them will be both beneficial and productive.
